Canadians Take to the Streets in Support of Legalizing Marijuana

Street Scenes in Vancouver

On April 20th 2014, thousands of Canadians assembled on the streets of Vancouver and other Canadian cities in a call to legalize marijuana. Celebrating and playing music, they lit up freely as law enforcement officials restrained their duties to crowd control. Recent legislation has attempted to limit the medicinal purchase of the drug to a few regulated marijuana grow operations. These changes however have met with strong opposition.

April 20th is the traditional day for celebrating cannabis culture, dating back to Californian counter-culture movements of the 1970s. This year’s rally was buoyed by growing optimism about the easing of marijuana laws. The basis for optimism were the more liberal policies adopted in some US states and in Uruguay.

Conflicting Attitudes to Drug Use

The attitude globally to marijuana varies but on the whole, officialdom views it in a negative light. The UN has issued strong warning against its legalization. Recently, the Canadian government has been striving to regulate the medical marijuana industry. They have faced opposition from people who want the right to be able to grow marijuana in their own homes and not be subject to the higher prices regulation may bring. Legally, the status of marijuana in Canada is shaky. Shifts of late have suggested a softer attitude towards convictions with the notion that ticketing be used rather than charging those in possession of small amounts.

Criminal Convictions

As the law currently stands, Canadians found in possession may face up to five years in prison. First time offenders will be treated more leniently, facing a $1000 fine or six months behind bars. Those found engaging unlawfully in marijuana grow operations may face stricter consideration.
